TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am starting my 11th year as a middle school social studies teacher in Independence, Kansas. I spent 4 years as a 7th grade Kansas History/World Geography teacher and am starting my 7th year as a 6th grade ancient civilizations teacher.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I like to use alot of hands-on, cooperative learning in my classroom. I also include lots of higher-order thinking in our class discussions and Kagan structures. I love incorporating technology into my lessons and use my Promethean board everyday. I also like a laid-back atmosphere and try to use humor whenever possible.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been a 2-time University of Kansas Teacher of the Week. This is a student-nomination program through KU's athletic department. Also, I have been nominated as our school's "Teacher of the Month" three times.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Pittsburg State University - B.S.Ed '05 (social studies education) Pittsburg State University - MS '10 (educational technology-LMS)

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am also starting my 9th year as an assistant girls' basketball coach at my middle school. I also serve as our middle school's quiz bowl coach/sponsor. I am our school's social studies department chairperson and serve on our building leadership team committee. I am on one of our district's PD pop-in teams. As an active NEA member, I serve on our local NEA's executive board as our local treasurer.
