The Amoeba Sisters are two sisters on a mission to demystify science with humor and relevance by creating videos, GIFs, handouts, and comics. Pinky has been in public school education for 12 years, and her experience spans across three different public school districts in Texas. She has a Texas teaching certificate in 4-8 science and 8-12 composite science (encompassing biology, chemistry, and physics). Amoeba Sisters only focuses on content that Pinky is certified to teach. Petunia has worked for a public school district as an analyst for several years, and she is the creator of all illustrations and GIFs. Together, the two combine their passions with their Amoeba Sisters resources.
We create short video cartoons on YouTube to teach life science content with memorable cartoons. Our videos, all under <10 minutes, are designed to introduce content and provide more classroom time for the more important things: classroom discussion, hands-on labs, and opportunities to create with the content. Our TpT resources center around these short videos.
We are passionate about transforming traditional lecture and notes. Our Unlectured Series an alternative to traditional lecture and notes in class- and places more emphasis on discussion, student questioning, and student creation. Our Unlectured Series is offered exclusively on TpT.
We use our video cartoons in our recap handouts to help students connect to the material after viewing one of our short videos. Many of the questions are "not google-able" (Pinky loves that term)- meaning, many of the responses are open ended and require application behind them. We are passionate about students as creators, so our intention with these handouts is that they are an introductory interaction with the material and act as supplements to the more important tasks: involving students in creating with the content and experiencing hands-on labs. The student handouts on our website are free, but we sell official answer keys and certain select handouts exclusively on TpT to support our work.
