TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am very excited to begin my third year of teaching at Prince Edward County High School in Farmville, Virginia in August of this year. I teach 10th grade English as well as 10th grade Pre-AP Honors English, English 10 SOL Academy, and 12th grade British literature. During student teaching, I taught an SAT Prep class and also two 11th grade Honors classes. I very much enjoy teaching British literature as it is my natural area of interest due to my British heritage and background.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Interaction, relevance and engagement are key focuses in my classroom. I believe that in order to maintain focus and interest, there must be interaction: between students, between teachers and students and between the community and students. Learning is a group effort and a child learns best when interacting with others. After all, this is an essential skill in the workplace today and I am, afterall, preparing them for adulthood. Relevance is a huge deal in my classroom as well. If the student is not interested or can not connect to the topic at hand then it has no meaning to them. I enjoy using SuperBowl commercials to teach persuasion, scavenger hunts to teach literary techniques and real-life questions in the form of writing prompts to connect to literary ideas and themes. Lastly, engagement...this comes with interaction and relevance. I believe in moving around and 'getting my hands dirty'. I will sit with groups and join in discussions and projects, I will draw, write and analyze with students. If they see me working hard, then they are surely to follow. I also believe adding a bit of humor to class helps a lot as well! If they see me having fun, then I am bound to see more smiles!

I am orginally from Nottinghamshire, England. I love to read, write and complete crafts. Before teaching, I worked in the restaurant business for 13 years. I believe this has helped me survive teaching as it instilled patience, open-mindedness and self-awareness in me.
