I am excited to be teaching 1st grade this year and using the new 2014 Journey Common Core program. I have been a Reading Specialist for the last 9 years and a classroom teacher for the 4 years prior. As a Reading Specialist, I have enjoyed teaching At Risk students and seeing their confidence bloom as Readers. I have also given several parent workshops and many teacher in-services. I have taught district courses for teachers on Reading Workshop, Comprehension strategies, Word Study and the power of the Spelling Inventory, Guided Reading, Reciprocal Teaching, and many more.
I choose to empower kids. If the students complete a word sort and discover that when y is at the end of a short word it says /i/, those students will hold onto that knowledge and own it. That is so much more meaningful than the teacher telling the students the rule. New learning should be a discovery, not a rule.
