After graduating college in, I worked briefly as a substitute teacher, and then got a permanent position as a Special Education paraprofessional with the school district I had been substituting for. For two years, I worked with 7th & 8th grade students at a middle school in SLG and inclusive settings. After being a para, I was the Director at an alternative school for two years for an urban school district. The student population included non-traditional learners and drop-out students returning to school. I am now working for the same district as a 7th grade Ancient Cultures teacher.
From my past experiences, I have learned that building a positive and supportive relationship with my students is an integral part to ensuring their educational success. If my students understand that I not only care about the material, but also about the individual student, they will respect me and therefore respect the class. Autonomy. I have witnessed the most success with my students when they have had autonomy and control over their education. They are more willing to accept responsibility and take their education more seriously.
