TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I lived in Galicia, Spain the year following my college graduation. I taught English to already bilingual (Spanish and Gallego) elementary students. I believe this gave me some great insight into teaching a second language while being able to use my strengths as a native English speaker. I now teach High School Spanish in a large suburban high school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I began learning Spanish as a 15 year old sophomore in a public high school. I believe that helps me meet my students right where they are. I try to teach with compassion knowing that learning a new language is not an easy task. I love that my students can see what progress they can make starting as a teenager just like I did. I try to make my classes interactive and applicable to their lives. It makes my day when a student tells me that a Spanish speaker asked them a basic question at a store and they could respond. :)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with my B.A. in Spanish and Electronic Media. Studying radio and television has definitely helped me with my communication skills with my students and to be able to provide them with some different resources to help engage them. I studied abroad in an extensive Spanish language program in Guanajuato, Mexico. Though while teaching in Spain, I was technically a teacher, and not a student, my time there greatly enhanced my language skills and my knowledge and understanding of Spanish culture.
