I have been a high school math teacher for 7 years and have also taught at the university level for 5 of those years (night classes, summer, etc.)
I sometimes liken teaching mathematics to a salesman selling a product that nobody wants. My job is to be the best salesman ever in order to convince my students that what they are learning is important. I do this in a variety of ways, but what should come out most in my lessons is the need to build relationships, foster critical thinking, and encourage collaboration. I do this by incorporating the types of activities that are in each lesson, and I have found a great deal of success.
I have been recognized 5 out of my 7 years by the Board of Education for excellence in the classroom and was an honorable mention in the Northland Kansas City area for "teacher of the year."
