I've been teaching children with autism spectrum disorders since 2003. I absolutely love my job and am so thankful that I have a career that brings me so much happiness. My primary focus was autism and preschool, however, I've moved up to elementary school and love teaching K-2 students on the spectrum.
My classroom is based on the structured teach model of TEACCH based out of UNC-CH in NC. However, it is not a pure model. Within my structure, I am very laid back to allow for changes and surprises within our day. So many people with autism are locked into sameness. I try to help break some of those barriers. We have many sensory breaks and outlets built into our program. Speech and occupational therapies are integrated into our class in lieu of the pull-out programs.
In 2007, I was teacher of the year at my school. I graduated with a 4.0 from Northern Arizona University.
I have a Bachelors of Science degree in Social Psychology from Park University and a Masters in Education in Early Childhood Education and Special Education from Northern Arizona University.
