I have 20+ years of classroom teaching experience at the high school level. I have taught virtually every discipline within the social studies curriculum including: World History, U.S. and Virginia History, Government, Psychology, and AP Psychology.
My teaching style is a combination of direct instruction (teacher-centered approach, the student-centered approach and the personal model. I use the student-centered approach to focus on student investigation and hands-on learning activities. In this role, I see myself more as a facilitator with a strong emphasis on the teacher-student relationship. I also lead by example and use the personal model of instruction by demonstrating to students how to access and comprehend information. In this teaching model, students learn through observing and copying my example. I may start a unit of instruction using the teacher-centered approach for the majority of lessons, but I will ultimately mix it with a student-centered approach where students are held responsible for their learning and development.
