TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been an art teacher for over 25 years, both in K-12 education and on the college level. Currently I am a professor in New York City teaching Art Methods to education majors. I also teach painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking, depending on scheduling and enrollment. I also work as a consultant for Studio in a School, observing and working with artist/teachers in New York City Schools. I was the Director of Art for a public school district before retiring to pursue college-level teaching and my own personal art making full-time. I have presented workshops and lectures at the National Art Education Association annual conferences over many years, as well as in local venues such as the New York State Art Teachers Association, the Long Island Art Teachers Association, the Art Supervisor's Association, the New York City Art Teachers Association, Studio in a School and various museums in the New York area.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I think learning can be fun, so my approach to teaching takes that in mind. I use surprise and humor and create open-ended lessons, where students get immediately engaged and involved. It's almost "learning by default" because you haven't lost them in telling them what they are going to learn--they're already knee-deep in the lesson!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was the Graduate Assistant in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I attended on full scholarships through my BFA and MFA. I won a Fellowship to Yale University Summer School of Music and Art, as well as many exhibition prizes and awards, teaching awards, grants and purchase prizes. I have had many group and solo exhibitions at museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim Museum, the Staten Island Museum and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art. My work is in many public and private collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Canada Council Art Bank, Petrocanada and the Staten Island Museum. I have been represented by Phyllis Kind Gallery and Susan Whitney Gallery and currently am represented by Art Studio on Main, 845.856.5083.
