My most recent position was as a 5th grade language arts & social studies teacher. I have also taught language arts and social studies in grades 6-9 and conversational English to adults in Ukraine. I tutor at-risk students and contribute to the Ohio Historical Society's on-line textbooks as well.
I haven't always been a teacher with a classroom. Before going back to get my Master's in Education, I had several jobs in several different fields. Teaching, training, and sharing knowledge were my favorite parts of each of those jobs. I trained new employees when I worked with regulatory insurance filings. I oversaw a childcare program for adults attending workforce development programs and supervised young women in the AmeriCorps VISTA and Jobs and Family Services' Work Experience programs. I also worked as an editorial assistant at a children's book publishing company where I did photo research and editing for some amazing fiction and nonfiction books aimed at reluctant readers. Out of all of the professional experiences I have had, I am most proud of the work I did to help others learn!
My students respond best when they see a connection in what they are learning to what they have experienced or want to experience. Therefore, my teaching style is based on making material relevant to students' lives while challenging them to problem solve & take ownership of their own learning. We focus on identifying how we learn best so I use many different types of activities in my classroom. I try to help students figure out not how smart they are, but rather how they are smart.

I enjoy putting together organized, thoughtful, and thorough lesson plans and activities. There is no higher compliment than when a fellow teacher chooses to use one in his or her classroom. I am happy to help provide you with a little less prep and a little more time with your students.
