I think this sums me as a teacher up pretty well: Coming into my fourth year of teaching and I thought I'd finally toughened up enough to pull off the authoritative 'look' in front of a class. Faced with my new Year 7's, I tried to channel the old "Don't smile until Easter" persona. After a couple of days and some stern words to establish routines, expectations and all that, I thought I was doing pretty well. Turns out, that's not how I had come across at all. My colleague was chatting with a couple of students from my class about how they were settling in and one said "Yeah it's been good. I like my teacher but I can't tell if she's telling us off or not cause she's always smiling." ...oops!
