I have taught students with autism and developmental disabilities for 6 years. My teaching experience has focused on teaching students in middle and high school. I have experience both in a school setting and non-school settings. Additionally, I have worked as an in-home therapist for students with autism and behavioral difficulties; respite worker and a sewing teacher for students with autism and developmental disabilities and a piano teacher for students with autism.
The interventions that I use with students who have disabilities is research-based. I take pride in using interventions that have been proven to work for my target population. I also believe in the importance of teaching academic skills and functional skills. Academic skills are aligned to common core standards and come with sample goals and objectives. Functional skills are taught using a variety of visual strategies including scripts, social stories and visual schedules. The ultimate goal is to always fade the prompt to get the student to perform the skill independently. Most of my projects have visual prompts that are gradually faded- all materials are provided.
