I am a Bilingual school-based speech language pathologist working with a mostly bilingual (Spanish-English) population. I also have a great deal of experience working with a variety of populations from early intervention to elementary school children with a diagnosis of Autism.
I believe that all students have the potential to meet standards of excellence. While all students do not have the same access to resources, they all have the capability of learning and contributing something new and unique to the world. As a school based speech language pathologist, my goal is to help students with language delays and disorders to meet Common Core Standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening so that they can access a quality education. I also believe that bilingualism is an advantage. There are cognitive benefits to being bilingual. Learning two languages does not cause speech and language problems. If not assessed accurately, bilingual children can be misdiagnosed as language disordered or delayed. It is important to take into consideration how a child’s first language might affect their English and to assess in both languages. If a child has a speech and language disorder then it will show up in both languages.
