TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught Latin and English from 1972 to 2011 at Camden-Rockport High School in Rockport,Maine.I also taught exploratory foreign language at Mary Taylor Middle School in Camden as well as Latin at the Penobscot School in Rockland and for the Adult Education department at CHRHS. I advised the Latin Club at CHRHS which took part in many Maine Junior Classical League conventions.I also led numerous student trips to Italy, the last in April of 2011.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I was known as a challenging teacher with high academic expectations of my students. My style could be summed up in probably one word-competition.I found during my teaching days that most students really enjoy competitive activies such as Jeopardy, Millionaire, Bingo, etc. The most popular game with my students was Blockbuster, a game I devised myself. These activities helped spur my students to study harder and be prepared for class.Playing these educational games made the class more enjoyable for both the students and the teacher.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have published 7 books of educational activies for Latin teachers with the American Classical league. An honor I shared with my students at CHRHS was winning the first place academic trophy in each of the last 16 Maine state Latin conventions we attended. My most treasured award is when in 2001 I received the Matthew I. Wienke trophy from the Classical Association of New England, an award given annually to one teacher of the Classics in New England.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended the University of Maine at Orono where I graduated with a major in Latin and a minor in English in 1972. Over the years I have taken numerous classes to hopefully increase my proficiency as a middle school and high school teacher.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I coached baseball for a number of years at CHRHS and was a basketball referee and baseball/softball umpire also. Now that I have retired from teaching I am a full-time lobsterman fishing out of South Thomaston, Maine.I have a wonderful wife,Laura, and three grown children as well as five grandchildren. My wife and I love attending our grandsons' sporting events which include football, basketball, wrestling and baseball. We also support our only granddaughter in softball.
