TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught high school English since 2003. I teach the at-risk state test classes (10th grade English II) and also English II Honors. I specialize in reading strategies for lower-level students. I am a trainer of teachers for the Common Core State Tests, and I also train student-teachers. I am part of our school district's Curriculum Advisory Panel for high school English. I also serve as the high school's English department chair and webmaster. I'm a member of the high school's Technology Committee, the high school's Library Advocacy Committee, the high school's Teacher Support Team Committee, and the district's Professional Development Committee. Outside of work, I am a wish granter for The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and I volunteer for Adrienne's House, a local women and children's shelter.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I did not find out until I was 35 that I have ADD, (Yes, I was tested). I struggled in school because of this limitation. It was very difficult for my brain to make memories because I had so much going on in my head (still is hard--even with meds), so I had to come up with learning and memory strategies. I use these strategies when I teach because most of my students have attention deficits. I teach active reading, annotating, illustrative note-taking, chunking, etc. My students connect to me easier because I'm open about my difficulties of remembering information and staying focused. I'm a little hyper-active as well (Ok, alot...), so that helps my students stay awake and engaged! I love using technology, but my school can't afford to equip us with laptops/Ipads. (I'm working on it, though! Please visit my Donors Choose page! Ha! http://www.donorschoose.org/MBishop)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Bachelor's degree in English Secondary Education and a Master's degree in English with an emphasis in secondary education. As soon as I pay off my student loans, I'll begin my journey for my Doctorate. That'll be in about a 100 years... Ugh.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have an identical twin sister, Amanda. (Yes, we look alike.) My husband is a coach and a history teacher. (Yes, we are very poor.) I have two boys, Kooper Crash and Tank (Don't ask. My husband got to name them.). I love dogs; I have a boxer (who likes to cuddle), a shih-tzu (who hates my guts), and a schnauzer (who pees on everything we set on the floor). My life is quite complete! Btw, if anyone is interested in paying off my student loans, please contact me. :)
