From 2004 to 2012 in Washington State and in New Delhi, India, I taught 5th to 9th grades in science and math. I'm currently at home part-time with my 2.2 kids (one is one the way!), and part time with a tech start up where I get to play around with the newest blended learning technologies. Though I'm not currently in the classroom, I'm excited to provide the nitty gritty that it really takes to support teachers who are!
One of my classroom routines is innovation, making students comfortable with trying on new ideas, new technologies, new ways of learning. Students know that I carefully measure the effectiveness of whatever we're trying out, so that we continually learn about science and math ideas that work, learning activities that pay off, and technologies that truly teach rather than just look cool. This way students also become reflective with their own use of technology!
At my 'retirement' party, my principal shared the hallmark of my classroom is seeing me geeking out in the lab right along with classroom full of my geek-in-training proteges. Any "Aha!" moment the students and I share is why I teach.
