Much of teaching at the PreK-K level is based on learning from your target audience. Each classroom is as different as each child in it so what works well in one class may not do as well in another. I try various approaches early in the school year: Flash cards, sorting games, word and picture association and even some cross association based on class made choices. Games work well and can get students excited about learning, either individually or in teams. I try to challenge those that are exceeding my expectations while also spending a little extra time with those falling behind so the overall class can progress at a good pace. Keeping the class in order is nice but letting them express themselves and let off steam once in a while can often lead to the same results, a quieter and more attentive group. Making learning fun at this early age can create more eager and creative students in the future.
