BookBox is a social venture with the mission of creating a ‘book’ for every child in his/her language. In our conception, a ‘book’ is a reading experience that can travel any audio-visual media platform, including print. We, therefore, innovated the ‘AniBook’ or animated book, to support early reading and language skills in his/her language. SLS is a pedagogically sound and proven technique, which has won many international awards. It has also been implemented widely on film song based TV programmes in India, in multiple languages, by our partner non-profit, PlanetRead. BookBox’s core competence is in creating and adapting AniBooks in many languages and transporting them to audio-visual and print media. Presently BookBox AniBooks are available in a mix of over 40 languages.
AniBooks flow from a simple fact – children love to watch cartoons. AniBooks are animated stories for children, with the narration appearing on-screen as Same Language Subtitles (SLS). Every word is highlighted in perfect timing with the audio narration, thus strengthening reading skills, automatically and subconsciously.

Created by literacy expert Dr. Brij Kothari, who holds a Ph.D. in Education from Cornell University, BookBox stories uses Same Language Subtitling (SLS) – synchronizing the text, audio and visual components of a story shown on screen – or “reading Karaoke style.” SLS is the simple idea of subtitling music videos, film, television and DVDs in the same language as the audio. Word for word, what is heard is what will be read on screen.
The key features of AniBooks are: 1) Adaptability in different languages and language combinations. On digital media, this allows a learner to tailor the language mix to one’s learning needs and build second language learning with the help of a known language. For instance, there is a substantial demand in Europe and Africa to learn English. AniBooks can be watched first in a known language and then in English. 2) Possibility of mass distribution on any audio-visual media such as broadcast TV, DVD/VCD, mobile phones, handhelds, internet, and last but not least, print.
