I taught for 20+ years, and the last 10 years were in grades 6-8th utilizing block scheduling (90-minutes for each grade) in an urban middle school. Prior to this, I taught in a suburban school district. Along with being a literacy teacher, I also was a trained literacy facilitator for 4-5th grade, professional developer/trainer, and a district-wide literacy curriculum writer for the Common Core Standards.

Having been an avid reader since I was little and a lover of browsing bookstores and libraries, I had a hard time understanding why an alarming number of boys came to my classroom each September as self-proclaimed non-readers, or worse yet, not even wanting to read books. I tried everything to get boys to want to read, but nothing worked, so I dug deeper. I went on a 20-year quest to figure out what was going on in the hearts and minds of preteen/early teen boys regarding reading. As a literacy teacher, I read, researched, hypothesized, engaged in trial and error, and talked to boys on a daily basis to determine if re-defining reading for them was possible. I discovered re-defining reading for boys is possible, and they will read! In my Boys Will Read | Parent Series (book #1 is published on Amazon (http://amzn.to/1tjcohj). I share everything I learned to help both parents and educators help 9- to 14-year-old boys so they will read. To learn more, visit my website: www.hillarytubin.com
