For the past 6+ years, I have worked as a dyslexia consultant / reading specialist / tutor. Prior to that, I was a classroom teacher in music and 4th grade - but primarily 3rd grade. In addition, I am a piano instructor and church musician. I recently served as vice president and events coordinator for the International Dyslexia Association - Kentucky Branch.
I adjust my teaching style to meet the educational needs of each child. I use the Barton Reading & Spelling method for children with dyslexia but supplement with games and Smart Board activities.
As Elementary Academic Coach for 3 years, my team received 1st place in the district and 2nd place in the region for two years straight.
I have attended 4 universities: University of Kentucky, Tennessee Tech, Memphis State, and Eastern Kentucky University, where I received an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education P-5 and Master's Degree in Reading & Writing K-12.
I have coordinated a 14-school Diocese of Lexington Spelling Bee for 11 years straight. I also assess for dyslexia and provide encouragement and advocacy to parents, teachers, administrators, and the students themselves. I give dyslexia simulations monthly so that people can see what it feels like to have the learning difference. In August of 2016, I started a group called the DYNAMOS - for kids with learning differences to get together each month and participate in activities to search out a talent or interest; thus, my motto.
