As a classroom teacher, I taught ELA 8 and 9 for 17 years, with additional electives of Theatre Arts, 18th Century British Literature, Science Fiction, and Journalism (award winning newspaper). In the school I worked for I specifically worked to increase NYS ELA 8 testing results and writing curriculum. Today, I am working as an administrator assisting schools in developing programs to support special education students.
My teaching style maintained high expectations and standards for students. I learned a long time ago, that raising the bar meant that students would reach for a higher level of success. Student success has always been a high priority for me, and I wanted to work with students and teach about life using literature that would resonate with them for a long time. Writing was very much a large part of our work, and improving student skills a major focus. I used a great deal of guided practice, and writing conferencing to support that skill development.
