I am in my 17th year teaching full-time in Primary Education. I have taught all subjects with the exception of French. This year I am focusing on Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. This is my 16th year teaching First Grade in Ontario, Canada. All of the schools I have taught in have been in rural communities.
I like to be organized and enjoy coming up with new classroom management techniques--whether to organize my room, the students or their behaviours. I use a SMARTboard for 90% of my lessons and it is an integral part of my classroom programme. With my "famous" daily calendar (now available for purchase!), that incorporates all strands of Math and some Language Arts, my first graders become teachers too--leading calendar on the SMARTboard independently and experimenting with their own creations on SMART Notebook during computer lab! It's amazing to see! Having a great connection with my students is what's most important to me--having a safe space where my "little people" feel comfortable so their learning can be an enjoyable as well as educational experience. I pride myself on creating a classroom that functions as a small "family". We learn, we laugh, we grow, we share! Room 15 is great place to be!
I've received my 10 year pin from my current School Board in appreciation of the last 17 years of dedicated service to public education. Looks like I'm headed for my 20 year pin too! I've been working on a full-time contract straight out of teacher's college since I was 21! I have worked closely in the editting, review, and pilot stages with a publishing company out of Toronto for a Primary Early Language/Phonics publication. I even have my name in the credits of their books! ;)
I have a BA from the University of Western Ontario in Sociology (1997) and received my BEd from the University of Windsor (1998). I also have my Primary Education Specialist (UWO/Nipissing University).
I'm a summer girl and love to be anywhere on or near the water! Two years ago I made a personal and professional choice to transfer out of the school I had been teaching at for the last 13 years! It was a sad day to say good-bye but it has opened a brand new set of opportunities for me at a new school with a beautiful view of the river that separates Canada from the US (Ontario/Michigan). Last year I redesigned my new classroom around a pirate theme and my lil mateys and I are smooth sailing through another "jolly roger" good year!
