As presented in New York City, Melissa uses a Power of Visualization workshop to relate the kids’ current experiences in school and the world, with her experiences manifesting what she wanted when she was in middle school and beyond. The Workshop is meant to be very interactive, with lots of questions welcome. She explains how she purposefully created her life and dreams through visualization, and how coloring helps with that. The goal of the workshop is to support the message of her self-published coloring book “Careers For Little Sisters: A coloring book for inspiration”, which encourages all children, especially young black and latina girls, to dream BIG goals for themselves and see their dreams as reality before they actually occur. She typically raffles off a copy of a signed coloring book to one of the attendees of the Workshop.

Growing up a little Puerto Rican child in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA, Melissa Del Toro Schaffner had no idea what she wanted to be when she “grew up”. When faced with the decision to choose a college major at seventeen (17) years old, she felt she had two options - be a teacher like her mom or an engineer like her dad. She chose Electrical Engineering, in spite of her artistic and creative tendencies. Grateful for having parents who supported her vision to enter a field that still, in 1991, was predominantly white and male, the seeds inspiration for Careers for Little Sisters began to sprout. Careers for Little Sisters bridges that gap for little girls between dreaming about a magical future and seeing positive, realistic role models living a bigger, better, and beautiful life. Melissa lives with her family in Queens, NY part of the year, and Phoenix, AZ part of the year.
