TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have enjoyed the excitement of teaching children for more than 18 years. For 8 years, I taught K, 1st and 2nd grades in a wonderful public school system in suburban Maryland. While I was home with my kids, I tutored kids from K all the way up to high school, mainly in math and reading. Currently, I teach four-year-olds in an amazing private preschool in Northern Virginia. I love seeing the spark of discovery in children's eyes as they learn something new!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe teaching needs to be creative, engaging, and hands-on. Research has shown that children learn best and retain more when their learning activities incorporate movement, music, and novelty, and are hands-on and multisensory. There was a saying about how to be a good teacher that used to go around: Be the guide on the side, not the sage on the stage. I really believe this to be true! Don't just tell the kids what they should know, create an environment where children can actively construct their knowledge. Less talking from the teacher, more doing from the students!
