TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 15 years. I have taught first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. Whenever somebody asks me about my favorite grade level, I have to say it's whatever I'm teaching right then. All ages of students have different unique and wonderful attributes! Being in the company of children every day stimulates and enlivens my brain, so I try to share that gift with my students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Wow! How things have changed! With all this emphasis on testing and Common Core, learning should still be fun. I try to incorporate various learning styles into my teaching style. Most of my students are very visual, so I hope to incorporate visually interesting ideas into my teaching materials.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have also served on science textbook adoption committees, as well as district Math and Reading Assessment committees (designing tests). Some of my students have won site and district science fair competitions the same year they were in my class. I TEACH Science Fair, especially since I was the site Science Fair Co0ordinator for many years at my schools. When I taught sixth grade science my students won first place as a team in our area's Science Olympiad over many other elementary school teams. Kids can do some amazing things when teachers lead the way! :)

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have two children of my own, a middle school girl in Honors classes and a boy in mainstreamed classes. I joke that my daughter has been a teenager since she was 8. (Those of you with teenagers know what I mean. :D) My son has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. Between the two of them, I have learned how to help a wide range of children in my classes over the years. Becoming a parent definitely made me a better teacher! I often bring up personal experiences using my children, our golden retriever, fluffy black cat, and black and white bunny to create interest among students and create a bridge to their own lives when I introduce new material.
