I have taught in both California and Utah in both public and private schools. I have served on the Curriculum and Common Core Implementation Committees of two districts. I currently teach reading intervention in a Special Education co-taught class and 8th grade English/Language Arts at a Title I school.
I use every second in class to push students to excel. There is no wasted time, so there is no busy work. I stick closely to the Common Core standards and make sure my students know what the day's objectives are. I like using graphic organizers, manipulatives, and kinesthetic activities.
I once received a standing ovation from my colleagues and a black mark in my file for asking the district to give us time to write lesson plans for the new Core without wasting our time with fake "training."
I earned a BA in Art History from BYU in 2005, but then discovered I didn't want to work in a museum. I found myself substitute teaching in California and then went back to school at Utah Valley University to earn a BS in English Teaching. Both degrees were awarded Cum Laude.
I teach in Perris, California, the armpit of Southern California; it's hot, smelly, not very scenic, but close to the heart. I enjoy going to zoos and museums with my husband and two preschool-age children, one neurotypical daughter and a beautifully autistic son.
