ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Carolyn McGown taught in the New York City public schools, working across the grades, teaching science, elementary education, special education, and English as a Second Language. Her experience was primarily in under-resourced communities and Title 1 schools. Upon leaving the K-12 classroom, Carolyn joined the training and support staff of the just-launching New York City Teaching Fellows program. She remained with the Teaching Fellows for five years, coordinating the pre-service training and on-going support for over 9,000 teachers. Carolyn then spent two years at Pace University working with Teach for America corps members and Teaching Fellows as a director within the Office of Alternative Certification. She then joined the faculty of Fordham University, where she was both a graduate instructor and the coordinator for graduate childhood and early childhood programs. She taught methods courses in mathematics, art, and social studies, along with graduate field practicum seminars. For the past few years, Carolyn has worked as an independent educational consultant in New York City, working with public, private, and charter schools, and local colleges. She has taught with CUNY in the Special Education program as a graduate instructor and field specialist. Her work has kept her in the field visiting teachers and schools regularly. Carolyn has also become an expert on teacher recruitment and hiring, offering workshops on navigating the job search. Her most recent project is a second book. It will be for teachers and parents of young children – strategies for supporting cognitive development for increased academic interest and success. As always, there will be an emphasis on urban education and under-resourced communities and populations. The book will be released in both English and Spanish. Carolyn is working towards an 2016 completion. www.ClassroomSurvival.com
