Since 2nd grade I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I began building my "portfolio" then. In 2000, I earned a BS degree from IUP (Indiana University of PA) in Early Childhood Education. I taught 1st grade in Maryland, after graduation, for a year before returning to Pennsylvania. I did my substituting time for two years. One semester of that time I was a long term sub in my current district teaching 3rd grade. I was hired full time in 2003. In 2007, I earned my Masters Degree in Education. I have taught 3rd grade for 8 years and 1st grade for 4 years.
For the last two years my grade as departmentalized. I now teach reading to two classes. I really miss teaching math, but I have become quite devoted to teaching reading. I do a lot of small group work. My students aren't sitting for long. When they aren't working with me doing guided reading, they are participating in centers, group work, independent work, or ipad activities.
None yet, but I'm sure I would be honored if it ever would happen. :) I just feel, that as a teacher, we aren't working for a physical award. If my students can show growth by my teaching, that's all I need. I just want them to love learning and fun doing it!
I've always loved school. My mom was also a teacher, and of course my mentor! I worked hard to succeed in elementary school, high school, undergrad, and graduate studies. Undergraduate Studies - IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) Graduate Studies - IUP
I have a very supportive husband and two great sons that have to deal with my teacher-ness (not a word...yet). We love the outdoors. Any chance we get we are outside biking, hiking, kayaking, sitting around a campfire with friends and family, fishing, and usually finding mud. I love to garden and cut grass. Sometimes I can be a real yard geek!
