I have taught in urban and rural settings from PreSchool to fourth grade gifted and every grade in between. My thirty years of teaching include ten years in a multiage first and second grade class. Presently I am in a fourth grade class for gifted and high achieving students.
I am all about hands-on and engaging learning.I want my classroom to be joyful place that is clearly kid-focused. My classrooms have always been filled with kid created projects that often overlap several content areas. There is a lot of conversation in my classroom and I welcome that wonderful chatter!
I have been Teacher of the Year at two schools, including my present school and Teacher of the Year Finalist for Broward County School District. I earned National Board Teacher Certification in 2000 and renewed that certification in 2009. I was Walmart Teacher of the Year, (Yes, I got the blue vest.), Broward County Math Teacher of the Year and I was recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (an award given by The White House and N.S.F.)
Bachelors in Elementary Ed and Physical Ed and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida Atlantic University, Endorsed in Gifted Education,
I am the creator or "Number Bracelets" those snappy little pipe cleaner rings with colored beads to demonstrate number bonds. I had used number bracelets for years in my class and I first wrote about them in my first book, Number Wonders. I have authored several math professional development books including Math in Action for Common Core for Grades k-2nd and Math in Action for Common Core for Grades 3-5, Number Sense of Number Bonds, three math games and one math computer game. I am a reviewer/referee for Teaching Children Mathematics Magazine and I've presented at National Council Teachers of Mathematics annual conferences often since 2000. I have traveled and worked with teachers in over forty states and I'm often struck by how much we teachers have in common.
