I grew up in Kilgore, Texas. A small town of about 12,000 in northeast Texas. I married at 20 and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where I raised my two sons. I taught in Lafayette in parochial and public schools for 8 years. After my divorce,I left teaching to go into sales and to purchase and run my own business (Quilters Corner). Unfortunately it lasted only for a little over 2 years with the bad economy at the time in Lafayette, I stayed in sales until I moved to Dallas, Texas. I worked in the Dallas Public Schools for 7 years teaching Gifted and Talented. My very restless nature plus the fact I do not like large cities sent me to small towns in New Mexico. First to Las Vegas, NM and then to Estancia, NM which has a population of about thousand people. I have 9 years of teaching experience here in New Mexico teaching Social Studies and Gifted and Talented in Middle and High Schools both on Native American Reservations and in public schools. Besides teaching I have many interest. I not only quilt but weave. I belong to the Las Aranas Weaving and Spinning Guild in Albuquerque, NM (about 50 miles from Estancia). I also play several musical instruments especially the Mountain Dulcimer and harmonica with a group called the Apple Mountain Strings and Things in Albuquerque.
My teaching style is traditional with eclectic education opportunities.
My proudest moment was when I received a $10,000 grant from Los Alamos National Labs (LANL) for a program I wrote called Choose To Succeed based on small books I had written - Building Self-Esteem, Study Skills, Test Taking Skills, Moral and Values. I was able to implement the program for 5th grade students in Las Vegas, NM public schools. This was the first grant I had ever written. The reason I didn't continue was the superintendent wanted me to continue it free of charge for his district. The other thing I am proud of is that I was one of two 7th grade teachers in Dallas Public Schools (8th largest school district in the country at the time) asked to write curriculum for the Social Studies Department and to also present some of my lessons at the Professional Development workshops at the beginning of school year. I also was asked to be an interim Social Studies Specialist for several months for the Dallas Public Schools, but decided I would prefer to be in the classroom. I was asked to write curriculum for the City of Las Vegas Rough Rider Museum. I finished several kits for them. It gave me a chance to learn more about New Mexico and especially the Rough Riders history in New Mexico.
I attended Kilgore Junior College for one and a half years. I attended Lamar Tech in Beaumont, Texas for a semester before getting married. It was the closest I could get to Lafayette, Louisiana. I graduated with a B.A. Degree in Social Studies from the University of Southwestern Louisiana now called University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). In Dallas, I attended Baylor and SMU taking Gifited and Talented graduate classes. In Albuquerque, I have attended several Advanced Placement classes. I have completed AP European History, AP U. S. History, AP Art History among others.
Choose To Succeed,LLC is the name of my company. I have been very involved in many community and church activities over the years and held many offices.
