I have been an English Language Arts teacher for the past 7 years in a small, rural district. I have taught at both the middle and high school level and my classes have ranged from reading recovery to Advanced Placement. I love teaching and when asked why I would never want to be an administrator, I reply that I love being in the classroom too much!
When I am in the classroom, I let my lessons develop based on the engagement of my students. I have objectives for each of my lessons, but I've learned that the best teacher is one who is flexible. Some of my best teaching days have been ones when my students take ownership of a idea or concept, and rather than simply sticking to the original lesson plan, I allow my students to explore and apply their learning.
I was honored to receive my school's Teacher of the Year Award during my second year of teaching. As a second year teacher, I felt like I was floundering most of the time, so it was a special experience to be recognized by my colleagues, all of whom I looked up to as mentors.
I am currently in my third year of my masters program. My goal in pursuing this education is to become a Literacy Specialist so that I can better help all my students succeed with their literacy skills.
Besides being my school's WEB adviser, Literary Magazine adviser and National Junior Honor Society adviser, I am busy planning my upcoming summer wedding to my wonderful fiance.
