I have been teaching for more than 25 years. I have taught special education, regular education, but my favorite years were spent in a kindergarten classroom. I'm a Reading Specialist in a K-2 school. I have a passion for teaching the Emergent Reader and Writer. I also LOVE presenting to teachers. I have presented at the Virginia State Reading Association Conference, the North Carolina State Reading Association, the Keystone State Reading Association, and the International Reading Association Conferences in Chicago and New Orleans. I'm always up for traveling to a conference. If you'd like to know, just ask.
I have taught a balanced literacy classroom for many years. I have had whole group instruction and small group instruction. I believe in hands-on learning with independence.
I was the Reading Teacher of the Year for Chesapeake Public Schools in 2007. I am a past BOD member and Past President of the Virginia State Reading Association. I was selected as Vice Chair of the Governor's Teacher Cabinet in 2013-14 and was a member of the Standards of Learning Reform Committee, as well. I am currently a BOD member of the International Literacy Association (but these ideas are mine and are not endorsed by them in any way).
My undergraduate in Special Education was earned in 1989 from Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. I received my Master's of Education and my Reading Certificate from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in 1996 and 2009, respectively.
