TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a fully-licensed English teacher. I graduated in December, 2015 from Minnesota State University Moorhead with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Communication Arts & Literature (Grades 5-12) and a minor in Music. Immediately after completion of college, I joined TeachersASAP as a substitute and paraprofessional. The company finds staff to work with students at local charter, private, and Montesorri schools. After an enjoyable 6 months with this employer, I found a full-time position at Milaca High School (MN), teaching English to 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. I taught there for 2 years and am now searching for teaching jobs in California.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style allows for students to take control of their own academic success and the methods to which they get there. A classroom and its curriculum should be student-centered. Students should not simply memorize information and regurgitate it back, but rather delve deep into the content through personal connections and hands-on activities. With that being said, I am a supportive and knowledgable professional resource that students feel comfortable enough to approach and ask questions. Taking on this type of role ensures that students know I understand that each and every one of them has a unique personality along with a different learning style. Differentiation and various types of teaching strategies are essential to achievement, as well as the integration of each student’s passions/interests.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Although I have not yet earned any honors or awards during these first 2 years of my teaching career, I plan to earn many in the future. I will soon be continuing my research of Communication Arts & Literature by earning a Master's degree in education. With every spare moment I have, I like to improve previous lesson plans as well as create new, exciting ones!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated high school from Rogers, MN with a high GPA and aspirations to become a teacher. During my time there, I was involved with the community "Lions" volunteering club, the National Honors Society, and every choir group there was. Then, I went on to college at MSUM for 5 years. I spent my time there learning about music business and English education. Within a year, I will begin my next step toward earning a Master's degree.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

My name is Catherine and I am 25 years old. Teaching has always been my passion. Ever since I can remember, I was making lesson plans/assignments and "teaching" my stuffed animas. This job is perfect for me and I wouldn't want to be doing anything different. When I am not working at school (or at home), you can find me listening to, dancing to, singing to, or writing music. I also enjoy animals, reading, cleaning, video games, and simply being mindful of whatever opportunity I have in front of me. I fully believe in the quote: "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." I love the sense of accomplishment in completing tasks and solving problems.
