I have been teaching for 10 years. I have been in the same classroom for 9 of the 10 years. This particular classroom is designed to educate students with Intellectual Disabilities as well as Extreme, Impulsive Behaviors (EBD). I also taught one year at a school that specialized in working with children with Autism. In both settings I have taught all subjects, as well as social emotional skills and coping strategies for inappropriate behaviors.
I like to think that my teaching style is hands on and interactive. My students for the majority learn best by playing with the information, manipulating it and relating it to real life. Behavior wise I try to think out of the box, and do what each student needs. I tend to be very blunt and straight forward. My classroom management belief is that every thing needs to be clear and consistent.
After 4 years of teaching I was my schools Teacher of the year. After winning the award, I have since have been nominated again 2 more times.
I went to school at Central Michigan University and majored in Special Education and minored in Child Development. I have continued my education since relocating to Florida. I have added the Basic Education and a Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsements to my teaching certification. I also have spent the last two years transferring my room into a Student Centered Learning Environment and specializing in teaching Science, Social Studies, and Social Skills. I take opportunities though the district to stay trained and up to date on new and interesting ways to have my students learn to their fullest potential.
