TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've always loved literature, writing, and spoken word poetry. In my 15 years of teaching in Chicago inner city classrooms, I've learned that students will relate to literature if you make it relatable to them. As a teacher, I've had to do my own homework and refashion the curriculum to fit the needs of my students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Most of my students come with labels and strikes against them, but nevertheless, incorporating literature that reflects the struggles of my students has created genuine learning in the classroom. I've adhered to the fact that rapport is extremely important and it needs to be established before teaching and learning can happen. All students have a valid story to tell about their lives. I give my students the space and platform to write about who they are and what they go through as they continue to learn about themselves and each other.
