TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am passionate about education. I earned a BSE from the University of Central Arkansas and started my teaching career in 4th grade. After working with English language learners for the first time, my interest in second language acquisition began. I obtained the K-12 ESL Endorsement and later received a Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2008. I continued teaching elementary students, but in a new role. I accepted the position as ESOL Specialist working with K-4 English language learners. Over the next 8 years my district's ELL population increased, which had me teaching over 100 students between four schools. My desire to give 100% to each of my students took its toll on me and I could no longer give the much needed instruction to the increasing number of ELLs - not at a level of what they deserved. With my increasing desire to educate ELLs, I discovered another option. I accepted a job to teach at an American school in Guadalajara, Mexico. 85% of the student population are Mexicans, 10% Americans, and 5% other (Asian, Russian, French). I would be fulfilling a dream of living abroad and teaching ELLs. This setting put me directly in the same environment. I was now a second language learner in an unfamiliar environment. Now, two years later, I am embarking on another exciting opportunity in the education field. I am returning to the United States to focus on sharing all that I have learned over the years. As I am able to provide educational resources to other educators, I am also assisting in providing a positive educational experience to English language learners. I enjoy traveling with my husband David and two daughters, Morgan and Dayle. My trips abroad offer a unique perspective when relating to my students. Some of my travels include Honduras, Mexico, Bahamas, France, and Costa Rica. In the summer of 2009, I spent a month traveling throughout Russia with other educators visiting schools and studying daily life and culture.
