I have worked with children for over 25 years. 15 plus of those years have been in the classroom. These past 8 years I have been working in kindergarten and I love it. I have worked with students ranging from severe special education to gifted, infants through teenagers, displaced youth to youth living in secure family situations.
Variety: singing, hands on, worksheets, repetition, reading groups I use a lot of repetitious mini lessons once the main topic has been taught. Some kindergarten students need lots of repetition. I believe that is the key to my success. Reading: I make sure the STUDENTS are READING at least 20 minutes everyday. The 20 min. does NOT count the time I am reading to them or explaining other reading concepts. I start the year, spending 2 days on each letter and teaching the students how to decode CVC words first. By Dec. the students will have learn to read the CVC words with all the short vowels and the stories that go with them. After Christmas break I introduce a sight word list of over 150 words. Plus stories that go with them. Many of my students are at mid 1st grade level and higher by the end of the kindergarten year.
