I have taught all grade levels of high school English- including SDAIE, CP and AP- for 10 years at a title I site located in the South Sacramento region. Helping diverse, underserved populations is a passion of mine and really inspires my teaching practice and the curriculum I develop. Meeting the needs of these learners means extending beyond the reach of prescribed district curriculum and designing resources that fill the gaps for my struggling students. Our school boasts one of the largest English Language Learner populations in the region. Our demographics have sharpened my focus in my classroom on developing strong, critical reading skills. I like to think of myself as a reading specialist, and I really honed this area of my teaching during the first years of my career when common core was gradually being implemented. The absence of an adopted common core text or substantial resources (until the 2017-18 school year!) forced myself and my esteemed colleagues to adapt and create rigorous curriculum that would transform our students into literate citizens upon graduation. Much of the work and resources I have to offer are a direct result of the generous feedback and incredible insight my students have given me over the years.
My philosophy on teaching revolves around maintaining a role as a positive facilitator. It's much less about what I know, and more about extracting what they know or are capable of knowing. I aim to put students in a position where they feel safe and empowered to teach and learn from one another. In the end, I learn more from students than they probably do from me!
Aspiring California Teacher of the Year
I am a proud UCLA alum with a degree in American Literature and Culture. Currently pursuing M.Ed
When my mind is not spinning about school and helping students, you can find me horsing around with my two beautiful children. When my own kids are napping or the house is eerily quiet, I am squeezing in a must-read book or silently cheering for my San Francisco Giants, Sacramento Kings, or UCLA Bruins.
