In 2015, I will be beginning my 19th year in education. I taught for 8 years and am beginning my 11th year as a middle school librarian. I am a life-longer learner and believe it is our duty as educators to teach students to think and utilize information. All of my lessons have these two goals in mind.
I believe students should go home more tired than the teacher from thinking and working. Facilitating learning often involves questioning and development of reasoning skills. There is definitely a place and value for rote memory of content. I never discount that, but my focus tends to be on what to do with that information once it has been processed and memorized. Effectively utilizing information is a crucial 21st century skill.
