In the years before beginning teacher, I was an award winning playwright working in the Toronto theatre scene. Since that time, I have been teaching drama for the past 13 years in which I have developed these materials, writing them for the specific purpose of classroom use and the challenges that are presented within that setting. This is a structural approach to using scripts as the basis for drama training, which in turn, structures the daily nature of classroom activities. All the scripts needed for these units are original, and have been extensively tested for years in my own classroom.
My teaching style is centred around classroom engagement in a busy, creative and performative space. I have structured my learning activities around full class involvement in an equitable manner - no major or minor roles - and to involve the maximum amount of choices that students are to commit to in their daily work. I have also worked to create materials which create an equitable space for the performance of race, gender and class expressions as well as being adaptable to different ability levels. I work within an extremely diverse environment, and the materials that I have created for use within my drama classroom reflect this.
