My most recent teaching job was on the urban, south side of Milwaukee, WI in a hispanic neighborhood with a large English Language Learner population. I taught Language Arts and Science to 5th and 6th grade students. I have also taught in urban Boston to high school students, preparing them to enter college and take their SATs as well as Preschool and Kindergarten students at Kindercare. I have learned from all of my experiences that each student is unique and every child craves learning. I have also learned that children love at all ages hands on experiences where they can touch and teach one another. I hope your students enjoy my products as much as mine did.
I emphasize cooperative based learning and hands on curriculum in my classroom. My students learn to work together no matter what level their peer is at so that they can enrich and engage one another. In my classroom, everyone has something to offer and everyone has something to receive from one another. My activities are fast paced, with no more than 15 minutes spent on any one activity. Once all of the students understand the basics of every lesson, they are welcome to explore on their own or with a peer.
University of Iowa Dean's List 3 semesters
I was taught using traditional classroom methods for much of my youth, with the exception of a very wacky Miss Frizzle-esch science teacher who taught me to think out of the box and really love learning for the first time in fifth grade. She is my inspiration for teaching, and I use many of her approaches with my own students. Now as a parent myself, I have chosen to send my daughter to a Montessori classroom where she is able to engage in hands on activities and learning on a daily basis. She loves school and will ask me all weekend or all summer if she is going to school tomorrow. I hope that my activities will engage your students to where they are looking forward to the next day in your classroom as well.
