TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am currently a School Counselor at a K-8 "Expeditionary Learning" Charter School where (along with counseling), I have the awesome job of developing and teaching lessons plans and activities that strengthen social and emotional skills and character. I also get to conduct workshops with teachers and parents on how to facilitate the same growth with their children. My activities and lessons were also developed in my previous challenging experience working in Juvenile Justice and alternative middle and high schools for "high-risk" youth - tough kids with high needs, little trust and low attention spans! I have also worked in adolescent and adult drug and alcohol treatment, college wellness and substance abuse programming, and as a private therapist and workshop facilitator.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that social and emotional skills and character development are learned best when lessons are fun, interactive, adventurous, appeal to diverse learning styles and are relevant to students' real lives. My teaching style utilizes my background in expressive arts, adventure-based education, service learning and diversity programming in combination with my counseling knowledge and experience. I am strongly rooted in the Developmental Asset model and belief in enhancing protective factors through my lessons. I therefore approach each lesson I teach and/or create as being valuable for my students to thrive in the world, and as somehow making the world a better place.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I consider it a great honor that I am asked to conduct workshops for school personnel and youth workers throughout my community on adolescent development, preventing and responding to substance abuse, developing character education programs, and maintaining nurturing school climates. Because of my work around bullying, substance abuse and diversity, I have also served on community coalitions addressing these issues.
