I have taught all my life. I started at 15 as a swim instructor and continued after college in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. I earned my teaching credential in 1992 and have over 20 years of classroom experience. I have taught K through 6th grade. Additionally, I have done everything from creating cross-aged tutoring programs to teaching ESL to adults. My experiences have given me a passion for teaching and making a difference. Currently, I am also teaching in a credentialing program at the university level.
I believe in learning that involves creative, hands-on experiences that allow students to tap into their own unique strengths. I like to make connections across the curriculum and to real world experiences. I believe in meeting the needs of a diverse learning community and that every child can learn. I have high expectations, yet I teach with love and understanding. Empowering students with self-confidence can move mountains. I help students to recognize their uniqueness and celebrate their strengths. I believe the fundamentals are important, but their application is what creates true learning.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to write and illustrate numerous titles with McGraw-Hill for teachers. I collaborated on books that I feel make a true difference in the lives of teachers and their classrooms. Several of these titles have won Teacher Choice Awards and are used in new teacher programs.
I graduated with two degrees from Virginia Tech and went on to receive my masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. My thesis was on teaching science through the arts.
I live in Los Angeles with my rescue pugs. I love to create and hope you find my materials useful and that they can sincerely make a difference in what you do. I illustrate all my materials. I don't use clip art, it's all me.
