I've always been an educator, however my formal teaching took off and flourished ten years ago as a homeschooler and then a creative writing teacher at my children's school. I continued to share my original curriculum with students of all ages through the local community continuing education program and summer College for Kids camps. As well as teaching in homeschooling co-ops, I hold small classes for children, teens, and adults, and teach writing workshops to authors of all ages.
I take a hands on teaching approach and engage my students in activities and discussions that relate to individual lessons. I see my students as individuals with specific needs, and with my advanced communications training, I listen not only to what the student is saying, but what they are not saying so I can find what is missing for them to get the most out of my lessons.
Every time a student beams with pride because they've accomplished something they didn't think they could, is an honor and my reward as a teacher. One recent privilege I've had is helping a struggling homeschool teen writer see that he truly was gifted and having his mom say that he's written more in a few weeks in my class than he did all last year. I love when my students finally "get it" and use the knew knowledge they have in their writing.
I graduated with a B.S. in telecommunications and journalism. After college I pursued fiction writing, attending conferences for the last ten years, racking up hundreds of hours of education (I've lost count) and publishing a couple of novels along the way. I have completed and continue to attend the Landmark Curriculum of Life seminars in personal development and education. I'm starting the process to lead some of these courses to young people and teens, and I'm excited to be part of developing these young people to see and reach their potential in life.
Besides raising four amazing human beings aka my brilliant and talented kids, publishing my novels, and teaching, I am most proud and excited about pursuing my dream of dancing I had when I was eight years old. I overcame a fear four years ago and worked hard learning swing and ballroom dancing, and have now set further goals to compete next year. I love traveling and helping people realize the best in themselves and helping them see the possibilities for their life.
