TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Working primarily as a freelance educator and performer for the last 17 years, I have been able to blend my real-world experience as a player, improviser, composer, and arranger with my experience as a teacher of concert bands, jazz ensembles and combos, chamber ensembles, as well as music theory and composition for individuals and classrooms. In recent years I have made a concerted effort to gear my methods and materials for younger players and those with the least amount of experience by creating music and materials that encourage improvisation, composition, and musical exploration.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that the fundamentals of instrumental music education should include development of creativity. Students should learn to play correctly, but they should also be able to create their own musical interpretations, compositions, improvisations, and informed critiques - all from the beginning!
