I have taught all levels of 9th and 10th grade English/Language Arts; as well as Broadcast Journalism and Media Studies for grades 11 and 12. I am also a member of the Authentic Assessment team at my school, which works to increase authentic assessment opportunities for students across the curriculum in our school. Through this committee, I am also involved in planning and running professional development geared at helping teachers create lessons and assessments which incorporate student voice and choice.
As a teacher, I am always looking for ways for my students to make personal connections with the curriculum, and that is what I base my teaching around. When planning units, I use the UbD approach, and I am always trying to incorporate new forms of authentic assessment in my classroom, along with the use of technology. For me, it is most important that my students understand the value and purpose of what they are learning and how it can relate to the real world and their own lives.
