I have 30+ years of experience as a special education teacher, coach, administrator, consultant, and part-time university faculty member. My focus has always been on the education of students with autism and intellectual disabilities. For the past 20 years, I have the privilege of supporting new teachers entering the field of special education in the area of curriculum and instruction, grades Pre-K to 12. My current university assignments includes a curriculum methods course and student teacher supervision in the area of Moderate/Severe Disabilities. In addition to this work, I also consult to neighboring school districts' special education programs, providing professional development in the areas of scheduling, classroom environment, assessment, and curriculum and instruction for students with autism and significant disabilities, grades K to 12.
I believe all students should have access to a rich and meaningful curriculum with rigor and high expectations. As a former classroom teacher of students with moderate to severe disabilities, I know well the challenge special education teachers face trying to find and create curriculum that is differentiated and engaging for every student. My passion is creating interactive, meaningful, and age-appropriate curriculum that integrates evidence-based practices. Whether in general or special education classrooms, I believe differentiated curriculum insures all students have access to instructional materials that address their educational needs within a community of diverse learners.
The biggest honor as a teacher was to see my students as happy and engaged members of their school community.
