Although I may still be newer to the profession, I have published an article in an education magazine, and have been featured in the Toronto Star's World Teachers Day issue. I am going on to 7 years teaching experience, and loving every minute of it! During these 7 years, I have taught Grade 4 all the way through to Grade 8, where I am currently teaching. I have experienced teaching a wide variety of students from multiple social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. I have worked as a Literacy Coach for a combined total of 3 years, and have had the opportunity for several professional development experiences, including being a demonstration class for my school board. Social Justice awareness, and problem-solving based instruction are at the very root of my teaching style. I place an emphasis on critical thought and problem solving, and act more as a facilitator of learning as opposed to a lecturer of knowledge. I believe there is value in posing real-world context problems in literacy and math, and allowing students to use information strategically presented to them in order to come to a logical conclusion or result. The way I approach instruction in my classroom is organic: the students drive the learning, and inquire about social justice issues that they are interested in learning about. Contrary to popular belief, I believe a strong inquiry based teaching program has a foundation in purposeful structure and guidelines. Maintaining a balance of regiment and open-ended learning allows students to flourish and capitalize on their own thinking and learning.
