TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a former General and Special Ed teacher. I also have experience lecturing in Child Development. I am mum to an autistic young adult. All the graphics used in my resources have been designed by to appeal to a wide age range, as I know how difficult it can be to find suitable resources for older students with autism and special needs. As some students with autism can be overloaded by too much visual input, my resources have been created with clear layouts and plain backgrounds.

MY TEACHING STYLE

While I was a classroom teacher I loved to create fun teaching resources for my students of all abilities. Adapting the school and classroom environment to meet the sensory needs of our students is essential to help them cope and engage with the world around them.. Having opportunities to complete tasks and activities independently is very important for our autistic students so that they do not become dependent on adult prompts and assistance. I believe that turn taking games and activities are a fantastic way to promote joint attention, and teach basic social skills to students with autism.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Education Degree (Hons) from UWS.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Honours Degree in Primary Education. Since my son's diagnosis in 2002 I have continued to educate myself about autism, sensory processing and speech and language therapy by studying many, many books on these subjects. I also keep up to date with research, therapies and strategies by reading autism specific publications.
